There is more than one kind of pipe
Ofwat distinguishes the public water main, the communication pipe and the private supply pipe. Responsibility depends on the arrangement, and some shared pipes can involve several property owners. A pipe being outside the house does not by itself settle the question.
Confirm the actual arrangement
Ask the water company and consult the appropriate property documents or advisers where needed. Shared drives and routes across neighbouring land can introduce access questions as well as responsibility questions.
Give the engineer an authorised instruction
Exact Source needs permission to investigate and access the relevant private pipework. The visit does not determine an ownership dispute or authorise work on the water company’s network. Share known boundaries and constraints before booking.
